The highlights of Terry Wogan

Our thoughts

Sir Terry Wogan, KBE, was well known for his radio and television work – most memorably his early morning radio show “Wake Up With Wogan” which had over 8 million regular listeners.

He was seen as a national treasure to many. A personality that almost everyone knew and loved. Here are just a few highlights of his career:

Children In Need

Sir Terry was a charitable man and was the face of the much loved Children In Need; a charity which Provides practical and lasting support to thousands of youngsters aged 18 and under. He hosted the famous Children In Need TV event annually and was always extremely passionate about the charity. This is what he said when asked about stopping presenting the show:

I’m used to long days. I do seven hours on my feet of live TV for Children in Need every year, so the day I can’t stand up is when I will stop doing it.

I’d love to keep going another 10 years, I’ll cling to the wreckage as long as I can.

I’m supposed to be retiring, but I’m not. I have no plans to retire – they’ll have to carry me off stage.

Blankety Blank

This British comedy game show was first broadcast 1979. Two contestants went head-to-head. The objective was to match the answers of as many of the six celebrity panellists as possible. It ran until march 1990 and it was then revived in 1997 and was on air for another 5 years but instead hosted by Paul O’Grady. Wogan presented Blankety Blank for 4 years (1979 – 1983).

2015 has been a brilliant year for us at The Travel Visa Company and we would like to say a massive thank you to all our hard working staff who have allowed us to be the award wining visa procurement agency that we are today! Here are some of our favourite highlights for 2015:

Award Winners!

Friday the 6th of November was the night that we won the award for Excellence in Customer Service. This was a major highlight for us at The Travel Visa Company. This was an award that represented the hard work, commitment, dedication and effort that the team had put in for the year. For this to be acknowledged by the South Cheshire Chamber of Commerce was an incredible feeling and, for us, is a massive achievement! Customer service is our primary focus and what sets us apart from other visa procurement agencies.

Business Events

During February of 2015, Ray Ward, Phillip Ashwell, Lisa Tatlock, Dan Taylor and Jon Hill attended The Business Travel Show. This is Europe’s leading exhibition and conference dedicated to Corporate Travel. This was our first year at this event and it was by far a success – pushing our brand out to a larger audience and securing new business contracts.

btsWe were also in attendance at the World Travel Market which took place in the first week of November. Representing The Travel Visa Company we had Phillip Ashwell (Head of Sales) and Reece Hardstaff (Research and Development Executive).  The two gave a presentation to around 400 professionals about the increasing opportunity for travelling students.

Happy Holidays

December has arrived and the New Year will soon be upon us so here is a run-down of the holiday events that will be closing off 2015!

Hanukkah

What is Hanukkah?

This holiday is celebrated by the Jewish community and lasts for 8 days (December 6 – 14). Back in 165 B.C.E the Greek king of Syria, outlawed Jewish rituals and ordered the Jews to worship Greek gods. Most Jews were, understandably, angry and decided to fight back. The Jewish rebel army managed to drive the opposing Syrian army out of Jerusalem and so reclaimed their land. Hanukkah is the celebration of this victory.

How is Hanukkah celebrated?

You can usually find a 9-branched candelabra, called a Hanukkiahlit. The 8 branches are set alight to represent the 8 days of Hanukkah while the 9th is used to light the others.

A common past-time for Jews during Hanukkah is playing the dreidel which is used for gambling with small candies, nuts or fruit!

Treats and gifts are often exchanged everyday during the 8 days. Childeren are given chocolate and money whereas the parents can receive other gifts including: books, oils and cooking recipes.

An important part of Hanukkah is the food. Traditional Jewish foods such as Latkes, doughnuts, and foods fried in oil are eaten by the families in these 8 days.

hanukkah

Kwanzaa

What is Kwanzaa?

This holiday was created in 1966 and is relatively new as holidays go. Unlike other holidays, it is not tied to any religion – it was created for Africans to celebrate their heritage. It got its name from the Swahili phrase “matunda ya kwanza,” which thanks the gods for their harvest.

It lasts from December 2 to the 1st of January.

How is it celebrated?

During Kwanzaa homes are decorated, gifts are exchanged and candles are lit! Each day a different candle is lit to represent a different African principle and each day it is a different candle that is lit.

Commonly, during Kwanzaa, you can find many people taking part in musical gatherings, candle lighting rituals and the feast that takes place on the 6th day (New Years eve).

kwanzaa

Christmas

What is Christmas?

Taking place on the 25th of December each year, this (as well as Easter) is one of the most important days of the year for Christians as it is the celebration of the birth of Jesus!

Often, children are told that Father Christmas (Santa) will squeeze down the chimney and put presents under the Christmas tree for each boy and girl that has been good this year but if you’ve been bad… you can expect to find coal in your stocking!

How is it celebrated?

Christmas is celebrated with popular festive carols, the most popular being ‘Silent Night’ and ‘O Little Town of Bethlehem’. Due to its popularity Christmas is also very embedded into pop culture. Best selling artists and songs include: ‘Band Aid – Do They Know It’s Christmas?’, Michael Bublé and soundtracks to films such as Home Alone and The Muppet Christmas Carol.

Each year families will decorate a fir tree with tinsel, wooden ornaments, baubles, sweets and then decoratively wrap presents to then be set under the tree for opening in morning. Treats and snacks are also prepared by families which include sausage rolls, mince pies, pigs in blankets and many others!

Then comes the feast! Traditionally a roast Turkey or Goose will be cooked, Brussels sprouts, roast potatoes, cranberry sauce, stuffing and lots of gravy!

When the day draws to an end it is likely that the family settle down to watch some festive television, movies or to keep themselves busy with the gifts they have just received.

From everyone here at The Travel Visa Company we would like to wish you all Happy Holidays!

Holiday Season in Europe

Why Europe?

If you’re looking for a lovely little winter get-away, then look no further… Europe is the place to be.

Europe plays host to charming small villages, world famous landmarks and some stunning cities such as Prague, Athens, Stockholm, Rome, Zurich and many, many more. With such a wide range of diverse and cultural places to go and see, travelling around Europe is a bucket list essential!

places

What to do whilst visiting Europe

Europe contains a great deal of different things to do and see. Here are just a few of our favourites:

Winter Sports

One of the most popular activities has to be Skiing. This is an adventurous pursuit that the whole family can get involved in. There’s a whole load of different ski resorts that can cater to your needs, budgets and skill level. It is said that Val Thorens (France) is rated one of the best ski resorts in the world – possibly due to the fact that it is the highest altitude resort in Europe!

But the fun doesn’t stop at skiing. Some ski resorts also offers downhill mountain biking, paragliding, ice-water scuba diving, sledding with huskies and you can even spend an evening in a Yurt. Other popular resorts include: La Plagne (France), Westondorf (Austria) and Alagna (Italy).

Another popular activity would be Mountain climbing. Now this isn’t for the faint hearted. Mountain climbs can be hard work and require a lot of training, dedication and commitment. Having said that, they are an incredible achievement and give you something to brag about for years to come! Popular mountain climbing destinations include: Fontainebleau (France), Västervik (Sweden) and San Vito Lo Capo, Sicily.

sports

Christmas Markets

For those of you who would rather relax into the festive season, Europe is the best place to find some of the most amazing Christmas markets around the world!

When you think of the Christmas markets, your first thought is probably of Berlin and their world renowned Christmas markets, however other cities such as Brussels, Cologne, Stockholm and Vienna are becoming more and more popular to travel to each year.

The markets are usually packed with shoppers out to experience everything the city has to offer. From the stalls to stores you can expect to find traditional hand-made gifts, an array of locally sourced foods accompanied with the classic: Mulled Wine, providing everything you need to get in to the Christmas spirit! But we must warn you that it is the middle of the winter and you will need to take this into account as temperatures drop and the chance of snow and ice increases.

markets

Lapland

Why not take the family out to Finland to meet Santa himself! Lapland is Finland’s most northern region and borders Sweden, Norway, Russia and the Baltic Sea. Flights from the UK usually take around 2 hours and 45 minutes.

Lapland is also known for its vast wilderness, ski resorts and (if you’re lucky enough) you may get a chance to see the famous Northern Lights! You can also get a ride in Santa’s sleigh, go for a winter safari by dog sled, visit local museums or even just relax in the sauna… and it is said that there are more saunas than personal vehicles in Finland!

christmas

Roadtrips

Just you, your family and the open road. The beauty of going on a road trip is that you can choose where you go, what you do, when you want. There are many pre-planned routes that you can follow which will take you to some of Europe’s most popular attractions – here’s a useful link for an incredible route featuring some stunning scenery: lifehacker.com

Thinking of visiting?

If you are a non-UK passport holder visiting Europe you may need what is called a ‘Schengen Visa’. This grants you access to 22 different European countries as well as Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein.

Everything you need to know about Thanksgiving!

What is thanksgiving about?

Each year, on the last Thursday in November, the American and Canadian community gather together in their homes to celebrate all they are thankful for.

Traditionally, Thanksgiving is a holiday celebrated to give thanks for the blessing of harvest. It is also important to note that Thanksgiving is thought to be just as important as the Christmas holidays by many Americans and Canadians!

thanks2

How is it celebrated?

Macy’s, a popular american department store, organise an annual Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York that is attended by over 3 million people and broadcast live on national television. This a tradition that has continued for over 80 years, won numerous awards and is seen by more than 50 million fans across the world each year!

American football is always a favourite on Thanksgiving. This year the Philadelphia Eagles take on the Detroit Lions (5.30pm GMT / 12.30pm EST) followed by the Carolina Panthers vs the Dallas Cowboys (9.30pm GMT / 4.30pm EST).

And how can we forget the food! Roast turkey with stuffing, potatoes, cranberry sauce, buttered rolls, gravy, green beans, and squash are just some of the delights you can expect to see, likely to be topped off with a cold refreshing beverage and a helping of candied yams or pumpkin pie!

thanks3.jpg

Origin

The history of Thanksgiving dates back to 1620, when a ship called the Mayflower left Plymouth, England, carrying 102 passengers on an adventure to the New World.  In November 1621, the Pilgrims successfully harvested their first crop of corn, so Governor William Bradford organised a celebratory feast. Both Europeans and Native Americans attended, and it’s now thought of as the first Thanksgiving, lasting three days. In 1846, author Sarah Josepha Hale campaigned for Thanksgiving to be recognised as a national holiday. This campaign lasted 17 years and before the letter she wrote to President Lincoln was successful. In 1863 legislation was passed which established a national holiday of Thanksgiving on the last Thursday of November every year.

thanks1

Black Friday

Black Friday lands on the Friday following Thanksgiving. This a day where retailers reduce prices to extreme levels allowing for massive discounts in an effort to increase sales. This has been a huge hit in america for a while and is moving abroad with certain brands based in the UK taking part – kick-starting the holiday shopping season.

Black Friday is a controversial event. Chaos is caused in department stores throughout the country as bargain hunters scramble to get their most desired products before another shopper snaps them up! So it doesn’t come as a surprise that accidents are common.

However, Cyber Monday has started to become a trend in many nations. The first Monday after Thanksgiving sees prices from on-line retailers fall, this obviously being a less stressful way to shop but hurry while stocks last as it has been said that Cyber Monday is becoming more popular than Black Friday!

thanks4

America

So if you are thinking of travelling out to america this holiday season you may require an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) but don’t worry, you’re in luck! We can help you with your visa/ESTA application!
